Beat the Heat

Helping people with disabilities and seniors have fun through the summer heat.

Summer can be a difficult season for seniors and people with disabilities in terms of staying cool and comfortable. However, there are still plenty of ways to get out and enjoy the season:

1.     Visit an indoor attraction: Check out an accessible museum, aquarium, or indoor water park. Not only will you be staying cool, but you’ll also be able to explore new areas and learn something new.

2.     Go to a park: Find a local park with accessible trails, picnic areas, and playgrounds. Bring along a cooling misting fan or a shade umbrella to keep you comfortable.

3.     Attend an outdoor concert or movie in the evening: Many outdoor events have accessible seating and accommodations for people with disabilities and seniors. Bring along a portable fan or umbrella to stay comfortable in the heat.

4.    Take a dip in the pool/sprinkler: If you have access to a pool, take advantage of it! Swim or relax in the water to beat the heat. Look for accessible pool lifts and other accommodations. There are also lots of splash pads, this can be a great alternative for some water fun that is easily accessible and FREE.

Remember to stay hydrated, wear sun protection, and take breaks when needed. It is also important to remember medication warnings that may have external sensitivity toward the heat. Know your limits and always have a well-thought-out schedule. With a little planning and preparation, people with disabilities and seniors can still have a fun and enjoyable summer!
